Recollections, 2019
Recollections is an exploration into the multifaceted and complex processes of memory and the way we interact with memory that lies within physical objects. The work stems from an interest in the cognitive processes behind memory and the complexity that lies within something that is constantly shifting and always intangible. The motif of the rope within Recollections represents a corporal interaction with an intangible object. Rope weaves through, around, and between fragments of rock, wood, sponge and polystyrene. All these materials bear signs of weathering or use, but differences in malleability and density suggest that memory tracks a path that is not linear. Memory shifts into something new influenced by time, place or person, and these explorations of materials through memory and of the physical self interacting with these objects emphasises this constant state of flux. The use of time-based mediums, as well as mediums that allow for a slow, gentle approach to the work, means that time is present across Recollections. The work explores the temporal nature of memory and shows memory as something which exists in the present but is also inextricably linked to the past.
